Our Equine Insurance covers all things equine, the horses themselves as well as the training stables and stud farms where they are kept. Thoroughbreds are the horses that are registered in the General Stud Book for racing and breeding, whilst sport horses are those used in competition such as eventing, show-jumping and polo. Weatherbys Hamilton is absolutely pre-eminent in the insurance of thoroughbreds and insures many of the bloodstock industry’s leading owners and their horses. Its partnership with Weatherbys gives it unrivalled access to pedigrees and race records which adds considerable value to the equine insurance service that it is able to provide to its clients.
In 2016 Weatherbys Hamilton
Insured 22% of winners at the Cheltenham Festival
Insured horses in the yards of 41% of the licensed Trainers and Permit Holders in the UK
Compensated 181 ROA members under our race curtailment scheme
Sponsored 25 races with a total of £681,500 in prize money
British racing is the most attractive in the world with its heritage, unmatched variety of racecourses and the high profile of its Flat and National Hunt racing. Notwithstanding relatively low levels of prize money, European racehorses are extremely highly regarded and attract investment by major national and international owners. Weatherbys Hamilton insures many of these horses against death and associated risks and is an acknowledged expert in all aspects of racehorse insurance.
Broodmares, stallions, foals, yearlings
Weatherbys is the owner of The General Stud Book and Weatherbys Hamilton matches its expertise in the insurance of broodmares, stallions, foals and yearlings. We insure many of the leading broodmare bands, as well as some of the most significant stallions standing at stud against death, subfertility or disability. Multi-million pound valuations are not uncommon and it is critical to have faith in your insurance policy if the worst happens. We also have close contact with many of leading veterinary surgeons whose advice can be invaluable to our clients.
Horses such as the legendary Valegro have raised the profile of dressage massively in recent years and the leading show-jumpers are also worth huge sums. This has raised the valuations of untried stock and increased the demand for insurance. Three day eventers and polo ponies complete the wide spectrum of horses for which Weatherbys Hamilton arranges equine insurance and clients can be assured of the same level of knowledgeable, personal service for whatever type of horse they own.
Stud and Stables insurance
Whether it be a 300 acre stud farm or a 10 box yard for a racehorse trainer, the buildings and associated equipment are often a mixture of household and agricultural risk. Weatherbys Hamilton provides a specialist insurance policy that is designed especially for these establishments and which provides the broadest cover at an extremely competitive price. We fully understand the specialist nature of stabling horses and the standard of care that is often lavished upon them and this is a natural extension of our equine insurance service.
Private and Commercial Motor
British racing requires racehorse trainers and stud farms to cover a high mileage travelling to race meetings and sales. The horses themselves obviously cover similar distances in horseboxes. We can organise fleet policies for all the vehicles involved and make sure that the policies allow the right people to be able to drive, both within the UK and abroad. We offer a personal service at the end of the telephone and changes of vehicle, additions of drivers and reporting of incidents is entirely straightforward.
Public and Employer’s Liability
Public liability is a pre-requisite for a racehorse trainer’s licence and Employer’s Liability is required by the law of the land for anyone with employees. These insurances protect the racehorse trainer or stud owner against claims for negligence made against them, whether it is from a racehorse kicking a car or from a work rider suffering a career threatening injury. Many insurers shy away from these risks but we offer a specialist policy that is specifically designed for the bloodstock industry and its particular needs. Additionally we provide Care Custody and Control insurance for anyone who is responsible for a third party’s horses.
